The show was originally scheduled to continue for five episodes, but after four, it appeared to run out of steam and the plot was wrapped up. I remember thinking in my last review that since the main plot (great wicked storm, a gobbler of planets, was killed) had been handled, Episode 5 might be the story equivalent of the janitor on clean-up duty after the credits rolled.

Halfway through the longest time between episodes of Minecraft: Story Mode, Telltale would suddenly reveal that there would be an additional three episodes to season one of the show, but you would have to pay for them.

You learn that Lukas’s former squad, The Ocelots, need to be made of stronger people than they are, so you continue to backhand Aiden until you have amassed enough weak points to support far-right politics for the next century.

While I won’t spoil the ending, my primary issue with the discovery is that it, regrettably, makes the entire episode adventure feel pointless because the story seems to be resolved sufficiently to never come up again.

Plot-wise, however, the story mostly moves along in a fairly decent, no-frills manner, except for a few lovely, fleeting allusions to Reuben where the story takes an intriguing dramatic turn.

Minecraft Story Mode 5 Episode Full Version

The episode seems to dance an odd one-step-forward, one-step-back interpretive dance when it comes to character development. It begins with the best of intentions, seeking to shed more light on Lukas, Ivor, and Petra—the three less prominent characters in the series.

This is one area where it succeeds, particularly with Ivor’s voice acting perfectly capturing the tone of an irate scientist who sings and laughs about scientific breakthroughs without feeling guilty, giving the previously flat character some nuance.

Well, every other character development point is where it stumbles and bangs its forehead against the corner of a stair. The most fundamental of motives to despise you, envy, is used to build up the adversary (Aiden, who has already been slapped).

It emerges so forcefully from nowhere that even the cast is perplexed. All other characters you encounter are flat, incapable of transcending beyond mere clichés or story devices to embody significance or lasting impressions.

Because you are unable to elicit sympathy from anyone outside of your small group, all of the options appear clear to you because you have no incentive to care about anyone else. Surprisingly, there is also very little humor.

I used to smile at the odd joke or, in a particularly moving moment, feel the cold, dead pulsing beat that I believe represents my inner youth, but this time I carried a straight face and seemed content the entire time.

Sadly, there were not many jokes, and the ones that did exist came from Paul Reuben’s (yep, Pee-Wee Herman) voice acting as Ivor gave unexpected life to a seemingly insignificant enemy. All I had expected, given previous episodes, was more hilarious jokes. A 5.5/10 is the final rating for Episode 5 of Minecraft Story Mode: Order Up.

The word “functional” best describes Order Up in my opinion. Although it sets up the next three episodes, it technically ends the series.

TellTale used to encourage investment in a project that was well thought out, but nowadays it feels as impersonal and detached as a profit-printing machine that prints figures. It’s not something to get excited about, but perhaps it’s worth a try, much as when you turn on a cartoon for the kids on a wet day or browse the channels at four in the morning.
